Coatings on Steel Sawguides are becoming increasingly important.  This is mainly due to the issues of corrosion and higher wear resistance. Modern Engineering offers two(2) coatings that help in regards to these requirements:

Black

Steel has the tendency to Rust. In Sawmills where there is increased salts in the water used to lubricate and cool the Sawguides, the rusting process is accelerated. Black penetrates into the outer layer of the steel.  This layer has a property of absorbing oil where normal steel will not. This absorbed oil helps the material to resist rust. It is the equivalent of seasoning of a cast iron pan. If the sawguide is maintained and the oil is not removed then the sawguide will not corrode as quickly over time

Black Max

Many people have used chrome on Sawguides. The advantage of chrome is that it is hard and wear resistant. The big disadvantage is that it is expensive to apply and it flakes off. As it flakes off the sawguide becomes more vulnerable to corrosion and inaccurate.  Black Max is a cost effective process where the outer layer of the Sawguide is made very hard (about 60 RC).  It does not flake off since it is inside the steel material and has the same oil absorbing properties as Black. This gives the sawguide greater wear resistance and makes it more resistant to rust when properly maintained.
